User Experience

User experience (aka human factors aka Information Architecture) is the sister discipline to web analytics. Both flow from customer insight, though often in different ways. Here are some great options to broaden your horizons:

Information Architecture Institute

  • This organization’s whole focus is on advancing the cause of IA as a discipline and among other disciplines.

Site Report Card

  • Get a quick review of your links, meta tags, site load time and more.

UI Test

  • This site lets you put in your domain name and then provides you links to a whole bunch of tools to assess your site’s functionality–code validation, load time, etc.

Usability.gov

  • This is a simple and general resource brought to you by the government, of all people.

Boxes and Arrows

  • This peer-written journal touches on the relevant UX topics of the day and serves as a focal point for the community.

UXmatters

  • A non-profit blog about UX news of the day by an all-volunteer staff.

Adaptive Path Blog

  • You’ve probably heard about UX week, the discipline’s premiere gathering. Both that and this blog are brought to you by Adaptive Path, a UX focused firm.

Functioning Form

  • This is another blog focused on interface design with an eye toward simplicity.

User Experience Design Resources

  • If that wasn’t enough, check out this long list of resources.

EyeTools

  • Eyetracking is one of the tools of usability research that can help you understand how people scan your site and whether the content you’re promoting is actually being seen. EyeTools is one of the vendors offering this service.

Site Search Tools

  • Site search is an important way to make it easy for people to browse your site. Check out this site for for reviews of the different search engines.

Stanford Web Credibility Project

  • This 10 point checklist will help you review the elements that can contribute to, or hinder, your web site’s credibility.
