Site search is an instant pressure release for visitors.  Even the most frustrating navigation and site can be redeemed with on point site search.  Conversely, some people will search regardless of how great your information architecture is.  Bonus points if you offer a variety of ways to sort and drill down into those results–by price, size, designer, information type, etc.
